How to Open HEIC Files on Mac (Free)

A .heic file that won't open, or that you need to convert to JPG? Here are the 4 free ways to open and convert HEIC images on macOS — from the built-in tool to a dedicated viewer.

What is a HEIC file?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's photo format since iOS 11. It stores images at roughly JPEG quality using about half the space. The downside: it's less universal, and some apps or platforms don't read it directly.

The good news: macOS opens HEIC natively since High Sierra (2017). If a HEIC won't open on your Mac, it's usually because it came from a non-Apple device, it's incomplete (interrupted download), or the third-party app you used doesn't support the format.

Method 1 — Preview (built-in, fastest)

Double-click the file: Preview opens it directly. If it opens with something else, right-click › Open WithPreview. Nothing to install.

Limitation: Preview stays basic for browsing an entire folder of photos or navigating quickly.

Method 2 — Convert HEIC to JPG (free, built-in)

  1. Open the HEIC with Preview.
  2. Menu File › Export…
  3. Choose the JPEG format, set the quality, then Save.

To convert several files at once: select them, open them all in Preview, then File › Export Selected Images.

Method 3 — The Photos app

If your HEIC files are imported into Photos, they display normally. To get one out as a JPG, drag it from Photos to the Desktop — macOS converts it automatically.

Method 4 — A dedicated, lightweight viewer

Pitop Viewer

If you handle a lot of photos, a dedicated viewer is more comfortable than Preview. Pitop Viewer opens HEIC and RAW natively, also plays videos, and offers a thumbnail mosaic, slideshow and light editing (rotate, crop, filters, EXIF) — all in an app of about 21 MB (Tauri/Rust, not Electron). Free and open source.

Other free viewers exist (Xee, qView, ImageGlass…); the key is choosing one that opens HEIC and RAW natively if you have many.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my Mac open a HEIC?

Most often: a file from a non-Apple device, an incomplete/corrupted file, or a third-party app that doesn't support the format. Test with Preview or Photos: if they open it, the file is fine.

How do I convert HEIC to JPG for free?

Preview › File › ExportJPEG format. Free and no extra software (see Method 2).

HEIC vs HEIF — what's the difference?

HEIF is the container, HEIC is Apple's implementation with HEVC compression. In practice, they're handled the same on a Mac.
